Old dogs rarely complain. They just quietly stop doing things — the sofa jump, the stairs, the full-speed greeting — and because it happens gradually, it reads as "slowing down" rather than what it often is: joint pain in a home built for a younger dog. The encouraging part is how much of the fix is environmental, and how clearly the veterinary guidance spells it out.
How common is arthritis in older dogs, really?
More common than the waiting room suggests. When researchers analysed the records of over 455,000 UK dogs, they estimated around 200,000 dogs affected every year, with the average affected dog living more than a tenth of its life with the condition — and Labradors, Golden Retrievers, heavier dogs and dogs over eight at the highest risk (Anderson et al., 2018). If your senior fits that profile, assume stiffness is pain until a vet says otherwise.
Traction first: the slippery-floor problem
The AAHA senior-care guidelines put non-slip flooring near the top of the home checklist, alongside ramps and orthopedic bedding (AAHA, 2023) — because slipping starts a spiral: a slip hurts and frightens, the dog moves less, muscle wastes, and weaker legs slip more. Rugs and runners along the dog's main routes fix most of it; for the dog itself, grippy socks turn laminate from an ice rink back into floor.
Rest that actually rests the joints
Guidelines call for increased padding and supportive bedding for seniors (AAHA, 2023): an old dog on a thin mat over hard floor wakes up stiffer, and a bed that's hard to climb into stops being used at all. Look for low entry, a flat supportive surface, and a washable cover — accidents happen more with age, and a bed that survives the machine keeps getting used.
Small upgrades that pull real weight
- Raised bowls for stiff necks — with one caveat. A modest stand spares an arthritic neck and shoulders at mealtimes. For large, deep-chested breeds, talk to your vet first — raised feeding has a complicated relationship with bloat risk (see our bloat article).
- Paw care counts more now. Older pads dry and crack, and long nails change how the foot loads — pair a balm with the nail routine.
- Keep the brain loud while the body quiets. Sniffing games are zero-impact enrichment — a snuffle mat is arthritis-proof play.
The line you shouldn't cross alone
Limping, overnight stiffness that eases with movement, reluctance on stairs, licking one joint — that's a pain workup, not a home-furnishing problem. Modern arthritis care (weight management, pain medication, controlled exercise) changes senior dogs' lives; the home changes above work best alongside it, not instead of it (AAHA, 2023).
